Individual Tutorial 3

Today's tutorial went through my essay so far.
I'd struggled with the direction and structure of it as I got toward the end of Chapter 2 and lost my way a bit. Because of this, it kind of trailed off a bit.
I wanted to ensure that I was on the right lines and check it over with my supervisor.

The importance of triangulation was pointed out.
I need to make sure that I am writing in this way:
Introduce - Explain - Support / Challenge / Question - Quote / Reference / Image

To help me narrow my focus, we labelled the chapters better
Chapter 2 : The Concept of the Witch
Chapter 3: The Image of the Witch

This helped me to recognise that the information I'd begun to include about Dürer actually belongs in Chapter 3. This is where I'll then start analysing other images and references.

Another point was that I could perhaps move the information about the Cathars into Chapter 3, as it analyses an example of the way that the heretics were depicted, which was the same as the way that the witches were later depicted.

We also discussed the practical side briefly, in which I explained my ideas about focusing on linocut, and depicting different tools and methods of torture.
This was approved as a good, relevant outcome, which is based in the research of my essay, but branches away and doesn't illustrate the essay.
One thing I was told to consider was whether I want to focus purely on the historical aspects, drawing from facts, objects and subjects from 400 years ago, or if I want to draw a contemporary counter point, as I do in my essay.

Although I really appreciate this idea, my interest well and truly lies in the historical. I want to use this practical brief as a means of developing my skills, getting really good at linocutting, and illustrating things that I'm really genuinely interested in. If I were to also incorporate the contemporary elements, such as contemporary tools of repression, for example, Fred suggested the wedding ring, ha, I think I would be straying away from my interests.

As this year and all the illustrative work I choose to do from now on, I do so to better my own creative practice, I want to stay true to myself as a practitioner.

By the next tutorial:
Chapter 3 needs developing

By the interim submission:
Introduction
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
